From The Washington Times:
‘An opportunity to shine’
Tuesday, November 18, 2008
Fashion designer and runway coach Harvey Star Washington recently presented his newest couture line for full-figured women at Howard University.
Mr. Washington started producing high-fashion events in 1978, putting together more than 300 across the country.
His shows features garments, furs and accessories for women and men. But lately he has focused primarily on women wearing larger sizes.
“Women and people of color grow up in a world that looks upon them as inferior,” say Mr. Washington. “As a result, many lack self-confidence and can appreciate the benefits of having an opportunity to shine. Others who have overcome the negative stigma enjoy presenting how magnificent they truly are.”
Mr. Washington’s models are not paid for their performance but he says that “the value a model derives from being featured in one of my … productions is priceless.”
About 200 people attended the event Sunday at the school’s Blackburn Center. The applause was heard across the campus of Howard, a historically black college.
